HACCP integrated into the management system – provides a completely unique overview in real time
When Nye Giske Havfiske was choosing a new ISM and safety management system for its vessel Atlantic Viking, two things were high on the list: user-friendliness and full overview.

The company has been with us all the way from CCOM 2.0 via CCOM 2.5 and on to CCOM X. Bjørn Inge Furuli, operations manager and designated person at Nye Giske Havfiske, says that they now have a system that more than exceeds expectations – especially with the new HACCP module, which has become a central part of daily operations. They needed a system that was easy to use and that provided control over all mandatory tasks on board – from procedures and deviations to food safety and quality assurance. Today, Atlantic Viking uses CCOM X for everything from safety management and self-control (HACCP), to the Transparency Act and documentation of other work tasks. It is the new HACCP functionality in particular that has simplified everyday life and strengthened control over food safety.
"We use the HACCP module for procedures, publishing checklists and planning work tasks to be carried out either periodically or as needed. Everything is available both at sea and on land, and it gives us a completely unique real-time overview." Bjørn Inge Furuli, Operations Manager and designated person at Nye Giske Havfiske
HACCP that works in practice
Furuli explains that HACCP could previously be somewhat cumbersome to follow up digitally, but that CCOM X has changed this:
– "The strength of HACCP in CCOM X is that it is incredibly easy for the crew to deal with. They don't have to deal with yet another system or extra training – it is integrated into the workflow and actively used."
He also emphasizes the value of the professional responsible on shore being able to monitor exactly the same things that happen on board:
– "We can see immediately when a checklist is completed, or if something has been forgotten. This allows us to give a friendly reminder – no matter where we are sitting. It provides both security and efficiency."
Flexible system adapted to reality
Using the related objects feature, Atlantic Viking can link checklists, procedures and deviations in a logical and user-friendly way. This provides quick access to information and the ability to adapt the system to its own operations. Furuli says the system is incredibly flexible; "We can build our own structure and link relevant elements together as we see fit. The HACCP checklists are linked directly to procedures and deviations – and everything is easy to find."
Another major advantage of CCOM X is the ability to document compliance with both HACCP and ISM requirements with a few keystrokes.
– "We can extract statistics, reports and documentation directly from the system. It gives us an overview and makes it much easier to handle inspections or requirements from authorities," says Furuli.
The crew quickly adopted the system, and Furuli emphasizes that ease of use was crucial:
"If you can open an online newspaper, you can use CCOM X. It's simple and intuitive – and that's exactly what makes it actually used in practice."
An inspiration to others
An important success criterion for Atlantic Viking has been the close collaboration with CCOM – both during implementation and in further development of functions.
– "We get quick responses and have been involved in influencing the development. It is clear that CCOM listens to users and takes our input into the development process. We have simply been involved in shaping the tool," says Furuli.
Atlantic Viking has already been a reference customer for other shipping companies that are now building their systems in the same way. Furuli concludes:
"Several other shipping companies have shown interest in how we work with HACCP in the CCOM X platform, and have started the process of implementing it after seeing how we use it in practice. It's just nice to be able to be a reference and share our experiences – especially when it helps make more people's everyday lives easier and better."
